Art education statement of belief

I believe that art provides a unique learning experience that cannot be achieved through any other means. I believe this experience is an essential part of the human experience as a whole and therefore it is important for art to be taught with the same regard as any other part of the curriculum. I also believe art can be used to help children understand and explore the world around them. Art can assist those who struggle to communicate with the world around them and, when utilized authentically, using art cross-curricular can enhance the material provided to the students and their understanding of that material.

I Believe art education does not need to be classified as either supplemental or integral. With proper instruction for educators, through comprehensive approaches like the discipline-based art education, it is possible for art education to be viewed as a crucial part of the Alberta Curriculum as well as an important support to other curricula and to the development of social and personal skills for students. I hope for a future where art education is given the same status as what we currently called the “core” subjects. I believe it is of the utmost importance that all teachers are well educated in how to teach art.

I think it is important to see the value that tools within the discipline of art can bring to other curricular areas. I have seen first hand the impact applying art concepts has on children with exceptionalities; allowing students with little or no speech to communicate thoughts or express ideas. Witnessing this have given me the confidence to say I believe art can be beneficial when used and taught as a supporting tool for other curricula. I believe that art education is essential regardless of how it is applied. With careful understanding and precise application of techniques and approach both ideologies can co-exist within our schools.

Printmaking and the DEHR to Care Gala

This project was a part of the printmaking unit I created as part of my PSII practicum placement. The students were introduced to the fundamentals of printmaking in both relief printing and silkscreening. They were then introduced to their final project which was a collaboration with the DEHR to Care gala put on by the Lethbridge District 51 DEHR to Care committee. The gala is put on once a year to raise awareness for different groups depending on a theme. This year the group decided to look at youth homelessness.  For the final assignment of the printmaking unit I had the art 10/20 class create their own images in either relief printing or silkscreening that draw attention to youth homelessness. The pieces were then submitted to the DEHR to Care gala where they were sold or auctioned off to raise money for a local charity- The McMan Youth Hub- that work directly with homeless youth in our community. Below you will find some of the images created by the students in my class that was sent to the gala!
